Our Newest Endeavor!
Beginning in 2019, The Strickland O’Connor Family Foundation will be funding a $1,000 annual scholarship for a Curwensville High School senior who will be continuing his or her education at a four-year college or university.
The Scholarship is named in honor of James Ralston Strickland, a 1950 graduate of Curwensville High School. After studying for a year at the Pennsylvania State University, James graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1956 and went on to serve his country honorably, including in the Viet Nam War, for 20 years. Upon his retirement from the United States Army, James worked as a civil engineer.
James, who came from modest means, believed passionately in the transformative power of education and its ability to “level the playing field” based upon hard work and merit. This Scholarship recognizes James’ commitment to providing resources to those who might not otherwise be able to afford the cost of a college education. It seeks to reward academic excellence together with meaningful participation in sports or extra-curricular activities and is awarded to a student with demonstrated financial need.
Applications will be available starting February 1, 2019 and should be submitted by April 15, 2019. The successful applicant will be notified on May 15, 2019. Applications may be completed and submitted at the below link.
